On Tuesday, May 28th, The Hebrew Academy conducted its fourth annual Science Fair. The students had a wonderful opportunity to explore the fascinating world of scientific investigation as well as enhance their research, writing, thinking, listening and speaking skills. Each student in grades 2 through 8 was responsible for writing a research report, creating a tri-board display and making a presentation to a panel of judges about their scientific findings. The students in grades Kindergarten and 1st made a classroom project with their teacher.

All of the students worked diligently on their projects, the results of which were amazing; and the enthusiasm with which the students made their presentations was exhilarating. We were very fortunate to have two experienced people be the judges for this event – Mr. Stu Salkin (Assistant Superintendent of the Mahwah School District) and Mrs. Bryant (nurse). Both judges made comments about how impressed they were with the knowledge that was gained by the students and how well they know the scientific investigation process.

While all of the students are winners, the following students won specific awards:

First Place:

Eitan Chamish – What are the Responses of Annelidas?

Second Place:

Sruly Kotlarsky & Jonathan Rubin – Why Do Some Things Glow Under a Black Light?

Third Place:

Yehuda Cohen & Rafi Feig – Do Drops of Hot Water Pop Tide Pods Faster than Cold Water?

Runners Up:

  • Sarah Haymov – Does the pH of Water Affect Plant Growth?
  • Alex & Talia Schwartz – How Does Red Wine Decrease the Risk of Heart Disease?
  • Mia Huerta – Is the Dye in Black Markers a Pure Color or a Mixture of Colors?

Ribbon Awards:

  • Research Award: David Haymov – Does Temperature Affect the Life of a Battery?
  • Visual Arts Award: Ruthie Israel – Smart Fingers
  • Behavioral & Social Science Award: Leah Kotlarsky & Galit Ratson – Can Music Affect Someone?

Dear Parents:

Please be advised that beginning on Monday, June 3rd, we will be administering CTBS Terra Nova standardized tests to students in grades 1 to 8 in Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.  These tests will be conducted over a 5-day period.

Please remind your child that there is nothing to be worried about.  Ample time will be given to complete the work, and the grades on the report cards will not be affected by the scores of these tests.

On the other hand, it is very important that we get an accurate idea of our students' skills and knowledge.  Please make sure that your child gets a good night's sleep and has breakfast in the morning before he/she comes to school.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,
Rabbi Avremel Kotlarsky

Shavuot is the Festival of the Giving of the Torah.

When Hashem gave the Torah to the Jewish people, the Jewish children were the guarantors! Hashem knew that He could count on the Jewish boys and girls to make sure the Jewish people would love the Torah, learn it, and keep its holy Mitzvot.

Every year, on the same date of the giving of the Torah, we celebrate this special day, by going to Shul and hearing the Aseret Hadibrot - Ten Commandments.

Remember! YOU are the guarantors of the Torah! So make sure to be there! (And bring your friends along, too!)

On Wednesday, May 15, 2013 make sure to go to your local Shul and hear the Aseret Hadibrot.

Come to Chabad , 315 North Main Street, New City, on the first day of Shavuot, Wednesday, May 15, 2013 for a special children's Shavuot Program at 11am – includes hearing the Ten Commandments being read and a delicious Ice Cream Party!

To be eligible for a Shavuot treat, hear the Aseret Hadibrot in Shul, have this note signed by your, and return it to school on Friday, May 17, 2012.

Dear Parents,

The Hebrew Academy very much appreciates the hospitality of the Rosenbaum Family and the hands on tour they provide each year to our students of their well tended backyard with goats, chickens and ducks. Amongst the many things they learn, the children also learn about kosher animals, the importance of kindness to animals and how to care for them.

After the heavy local media coverage of the kidnapping Pelegrina two weeks ago, and her recent miraculous return, the village now wants to take her away from them. Please vote to help us keep Pelegrina and her friends at home where they belong!
